Hundreds of churches burnt in violence in Manipur
London (Bureau Report) British MP and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s special envoy on religious freedom Fiona Bruce has raised the issue of violence in Manipur in the British Parliament.
Speaking in the British Parliament on Thursday, Fiona Bruce claimed that hundreds of churches have been burnt in violence in Manipur. He said that the violence in Manipur is a well-planned conspiracy.
Fiona Bruce said, “Hundreds of churches have been burnt down since May, many completely destroyed. More than a hundred people have died and more than fifty thousand are refugees. Not only churches but schools were also targeted. It is clear that all this is being done under the plan and religion is a big factor behind these attacks.
Bruce said, “Despite all this there is very little reporting about this. There people are crying out for help. What can the Church of England do to draw more attention to suffering?”
Bruce also cited a report by former BBC correspondent David Campanel for the International Religious Freedom and Belief Alliance (IRFBA).
Fiona Bruce is also the chair of the IRFBA. On May 15, the IRFBA held a meeting of an expert committee in which concern was expressed about the violence in Manipur.
The IRFBA report contains statements from victims and eyewitnesses. It has been said in this report that more attention needs to be paid to the large scale damage to religious places.
It has also been said in the report that due to this violence, the right of people to assemble in their places of worship has been directly affected and it will cost a lot to rebuild the churches.
